1:10pm: Precious metals gain
Stocks were mixed in the early afternoon as investors weighed up the latest on Trump’s tariffs amid rising hopes of a jumbo interest rate cut from the Fed.
The Nasdaq was 0.5% higher and the S&P 500 gained 0.2%. The Dow Jones slipped 23 points at 45,377 points.
Meanwhile, the gold and silver price rally continued. “Precious metals continue their strong rallies amid Fed rate cut expectations with the gold price hitting a record high at $3,637 and silver topping $41, a level last seen in September 2011,” IG senior technical analyst Axel Rudolph said.
“Crude oil rebounded from a three-day drop as OPEC+ slows its output hikes and despite the world's second-largest importer China seeing its weakest export growth in six months.”
11:42am: Crypto appealing amid instability
Signs of political instability continue to boost the appeal of crypto assets, according to IG chief market analyst Chris Beauchamp.
“August ended on a weak note for crypto assets, but the first week of September has seen some stabilisation, or at least an end to the selling for the time being,” Beauchamp said.
“Bitcoin, a big loser last month, albeit from a record high, has moved back above $110,000, and continues to hold above it, while ether has been supported around $4,200.”
A rate cut from the Fed will also provide gains in the space, as well as for equities, he added.
“The month has seen an even mix of buying and selling so far, reflecting some caution around recent price weakness while also hoping that the Fed rate cut will power risk assets higher,” Beauchamp said.
10:48am: Week ahead
All eyes on Wall Street this week will be on US inflation data, with the Consumer Price Index on Thursday and the Producer Price Index on Wednesday.
The reports carry added weight after a weak August jobs report, and will be key in determining whether the Federal Reserve opts for a standard 25 basis point cut or a larger 50 basis point move at its September 17 meeting.
After August’s payrolls report showed just a 22,000 increase in jobs, recession concerns have grown and traders are betting on more aggressive easing.
“The payrolls report triggered a big recalibration in interest rate expectations in the US,” said Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB.
“There is now a growing chance of a 50 basis point rate cut in the US on 17th September, and the Fed Fund Futures market is pricing in six rate cuts in the next 18 months.”
For Deutsche Bank economists, the August employment data should be sufficient to secure at least a quarter-point move, though the inflation numbers will be decisive.
Earnings will be sparse this week, but investors will see results from Kroger, Adobe, GameStop, and Chewy.
9:55am: Tech gains, but mixed start
It's been a mixed start on Wall Street, with the Dow Jones down 0.1%, but the S&P 500 up 0.2% and the Nasdaq Composite rising 0.7%.
Top of the Nasdaq 100 is Applovin, jumping almost 11%, follwing it being added to the S&P 500, along with Robinhood.
Broadcom is up 4.5%, Palantir Technologies, NVIDIA are up either side of 2%.
Holding back the Dow are 1%-plus falls for Verizon, 3M, Amgen and Merck.
8:02am: Stock bounce-back predicted
Wall Street stocks are predicted to bounce back on Monday from the negative finish to last week that was sparked by more disappointing US jobs market news, which has led to expectations for successive Federal Reserve interest rate cuts.
US stock futures were all slightly in green ahead of the first session of the week, with the S&P 500 expected to rise 0.2%, the Nasdaq 0.4% and the Dow Jones 0.15%.
On Friday, the Dow led the decline, falling 0.5%, the S&P dropped 0.3% after first notching a new record high, and the Nasdaq ended just seven points below flat.
The non-farm payrolls report revealed just 22,000 new jobs were added in the economy last month.
US bonds fell to multi-week or multi-month lows, with Fed fund futures now pricing about 100% probability of a rate cut at next week's meeting, with 70%-plus odds for both the remaining meetings in October and December.
The payrolls report "underscored the weakness evident within the labour market under Trump," said market analyst Josh Mahony at Rostro.
"With inflation data due later on this week, the lack of any notable surge in price pressures thus far has left markets wondering whether we could in fact see a 50bp cut next week."
US PPI inflation is due on Wednesday and CPI on Thursday.
Gains for gold continued, with the precious metal topping $3,600 an ounce and now up $1000 since the start of the year in anticipation of a major dovish swing from the Fed, pressure on the dollar and lower Treasury yields, said Mahony.
