Cobalt Blue Holdings Ltd (ASX:COB, OTC:CBBHF) CEO Dr Andrew Tong talked with Proactive about the company's continued progress at the Broken Hill Technology Centre (BHTC), as it works toward a final investment decision on its Kwinana Cobalt Refinery (KCR) by the end of 2025.
Dr Tong explained that BHTC was initially developed in 2020 during the COVID-19 period to support pilot-scale testing of all processing steps related to the Broken Hill Cobalt Project. This included mining, concentration, precipitation, and ultimately the production of cobalt products and elemental sulfur.
“In the last two years, we’ve really been focused on running that pilot program for our Kwinana refinery,” Tong said. He also confirmed that the company has successfully produced high-quality cobalt sulfate and cobalt metal — the latter in response to growing demand in defense applications and portable electronics.
Dr Tong further noted Cobalt Blue's move to source cobalt units from recycled battery black mass, given the current shortfall in domestic cobalt intermediates. He discussed a memorandum of understanding with Ecobat and potential future feedstock from battery recyclers, aligning with the company’s long-term vision for Australian-sourced inputs.
