OpenAI weighs $500bn-backed data centre push in India

OpenAI is exploring partnerships to build a large-scale data centre in India with at least one gigawatt of capacity, according to Bloomberg.

The Microsoft-backed group has registered a legal entity in the country, is assembling a local team, and plans to open an office in New Delhi later this year. India is already OpenAI’s second-largest market by users.

The proposed facility would form part of its “Stargate” initiative, a global push to expand artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Bloomberg said chief executive Sam Altman may unveil the plan during a September visit, though the site and timeline remain undecided.

Stargate, launched in January, is a private-sector programme backed by SoftBank, Oracle and OpenAI with up to $500 billion in investment.
