Musk startup xAI sues Apple, ChatGPT creator OpenAI over competitive practices

Tesla founder Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup xAI is suing Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL, ETR:APC) and OpenAI, claiming both companies illegally conspired to stifle competition for artificial intelligence.

In a legal filing in US federal court in Texas on Monday, xAI’s stated that Apple and OpenAI have "locked up markets to maintain their monopolies and prevent innovators like X and xAI from competing."

The lawsuit alleges that Apple’s exclusive deal with OpenAI has limited the X app and Grok app from being more prominently featured in Apple’s App store.

xAI is seeking billions of dollars in alleged damages.

In a statement, an OpenAI spokesperson said the legal filing “is consistent with Mr Musk’s ongoing pattern of harassment.”

Musk had threatened to sue Apple in a post on the social media platform X earlier this month, writing that Apple “makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store.”
