Sona Nanotech Inc (CSE:SONA, OTCQB:SNANF) announced that it has completed treatment and follow-up assessments for the first cohort of patients in its early feasibility study of Targeted Hyperthermia Therapy (THT) for late-stage melanoma.
The company, which is developing oncology-focused therapies based on its proprietary biocompatible gold nanorod technology, said it has received approval to begin treating the second patient cohort.
Sona’s chief medical officer Dr Carman Giacomantonio arrived in Santiago this past weekend to oversee the next stage of treatments.
Dr Giacomantonio highlighted that the company treated a variety of melanoma tumor types in the first cohort, encountering no significant adverse health events in patients.
“As we proceed with the second cohort of patients, we have reason for optimism based on early clinical responses and tumor biopsy results for patients treated so far,” Dr Giacomantonio said.
“We look forward to completing the targeted number of patients by the end of September and then running the more extensive scientific analysis to fully assess immune engagement in treated tumors following THT.”
David Regan, Sona CEO, also expressed enthusiasm as the company progresses towards having validated clinical data complementing its existing preclinical data.
“We also excitedly anticipate additional scientific insights into our novel technology from studies planned for submission to leading scientific journals in the fall that, combined with our clinical study, will provide for a more comprehensive data package,” Regan said.
“Furthermore, with our previously announced ethics approval secured for a larger clinical trial in Canada, we are currently working to incorporate the significant learnings to date from our Early Feasibility Study into our application to Health Canada.”
