Fat busters having a muted impact consumer sector. But for how long?

Fine dining under pressure, beer sales at risk, and snack makers bracing for a shake-up. The rise of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs is starting to ripple through the consumer economy.

These medicines, best known under brands like Ozempic and Wegovy, are helping millions eat less by slowing digestion and curbing appetite.

Bloomberg’s survey data show that users are cutting back on food and alcohol, with restaurants, alcohol producers and snack makers facing the sharp end of that trend.

So far, the impact is muted. Only about 8–10% of Americans are on GLP-1s, but a PwC study found as many as one-third would consider using them. Here in the UK, the trend is being aped.

Cost is the big hurdle. At nearly US$1,000 a month in the US (a more reasonable £200-£250 here in the UK), access has been limited, though Novo Nordisk’s move to halve the cash price of Ozempic to US$499 could widen demand.

Corporate insurance, and here in the UK NHS adoption, is another swing factor.

"For now, a lack of affordability has softened the impact of shifting preferences and skewed the effects toward companies serving a higher-income clientele," said Thomas Shipp, head of Equities at LPL Financial.

Sales at fine dining chains have lagged cheaper quick-service outlets, with some restaurants already experimenting with smaller-portion menus.

Alcohol producers face a subtler risk. The heaviest 8% of drinkers account for half of US alcohol demand, meaning even small cuts in consumption from this group could move the dial.

It’s not all bad news. Clothing retailers could benefit from even modest weight loss among patients, while protein-rich foods may gain at the expense of calorie-dense snacks as users focus on preserving muscle.

Winners and losers within consumer staples and discretionary will shift, but the overall impact on the sectors looks modest in the short run. Longer-term, though, companies ignoring the GLP-1 effect do so at their peril.
