Markets in a Minute: ASX 200 edges higher as consumer and property stocks lift, materials drag

The ASX 200 closed up on Wednesday, gaining around .25 of a per cent.

Today's top sectors were consumer discretionary and real estate, both shot up close to 2 per cent, whilst materials, on the other hand, dragged the bourse down, and shed more than 2 per cent.

IN THE GREEN

Stockland (ASX:SGP) jumped today after posting a sharp jump in profit, fuelled by a rebound in the housing market, new acquisitions, and a stronger logistics portfolio.

The Lottery Corporation (ASX:TLC) also shot up after posting full-year results that, despite lower revenue and profit, were seen as resilient following last year’s record jackpots.

RED

Iluka Resources (ASX:ILU) took a plunge after the company posted half-year results showing weaker mineral sands sales and a sharp drop in profit amid tough global market conditions.

James Hardie (ASX:JHX) was also down today after quarterly earnings and guidance came in well below expectations, sparking warnings of a major downgrade to profit forecasts.
