374Water says technology destroys toxic PFAS in landfill leachate

374Water Inc (NASDAQ:SCWO) said it has successfully removed toxic PFAS chemicals from landfill wastewater using its AirSCWO treatment system.

The company said the results showed PFAS levels in treated effluent were non-detectable, which highlights the system’s ability to neutralize one of the most problematic waste streams facing landfill operators.

PFAS, known as “forever chemicals,” are widely used in consumer products such as food packaging and water-resistant materials. With about 3,000 active and 10,000 capped landfills in the United States, regulators and communities have raised concerns about the health risks of PFAS-contaminated leachate, which can include cancers and autoimmune disorders.

Current landfill leachate management methods, such as sending waste to municipal wastewater plants, do not eliminate PFAS, often leaving landfill operators with few disposal options.

“This marks a crucial milestone for our AirSCWO technology,” CEO Chris Gannon said in a statement. “The ability to destroy PFAS in landfill leachate—one of the most challenging waste streams—without detectable residues demonstrates not just technical success, but real-world impact.”

The company said its technology achieves more than 99.99% destruction of PFAS compounds and represents an $80 million annual addressable market across US landfills.

“Landfill leachate contaminated with PFAS has become an increasingly concerning national problem with limited disposal options,” Gannon added.

“This successful destruction project shows that our AirSCWO technology can help communities, landfill operators, and industries move beyond containment to true elimination.”
