Recce Pharmaceuticals Ltd earlier this week reported strong preclinical data for its RECCE® 327 Topical Gel (R327G). Chief executive James Graham told Proactive the gel was effective against two antibiotic-resistant bacteria and also accelerated wound healing.

Significant performance
The study was undertaken with the US Department of Defense, specifically the Department of the Army, and targeted bone wound infections. The company said R327G is the first new class of antibiotics in more than 40 years.
Graham told Proactive the gel’s performance against both types of bacteria was significant. He said the trials showed a 99.99% reduction in infection in as little as nine days, which allowed wounds to heal faster. The company said faster healing reduces the risk of ongoing infections and improves patient outcomes.
Defence grant
The preclinical results form part of a programme funded by a US $2 million grant from the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. The company said the grant has been proportionately utilised for this study, and that it also supports other studies aimed at developing R327G for military and civilian bone treatments.
Graham said R327G outperformed the comparator treatment in the trial. The company said this may support opportunities for additional funding from the US Army in the future.
Recce Pharmaceuticals said it remains committed to progressing R327G as part of its strategy to combat antibiotic-resistant infections.
