The S&P/ASX 200 closed lower on Wednesday, falling 53.70 points or 0.60% to 8,827.10 after reaching a new 100-day high earlier in the session. AGL Energy Limited and Beach Energy Limited were the weakest performers, down 12.62% and 7.55% respectively. Over the past five sessions, the benchmark index has remained largely flat and now sits 0.71% below its 52-week peak.

The S&P/ASX Small Ordinaries Index [XSO] finished 12.40 points or 0.36% higher at 3,468.70, extending its five-day gain to 33.20 points or 0.97%.
