Tech Bytes: Altman takes on Musk in brain-tech race

Amid an escalation in the spat between two of tech’s most recognisable leaders, reports emerged on Wednesday that Sam Altman and Elon Musk’s rivalry is expanding into new and uncharted territory — the human brain. OpenAI CEO Altman is reportedly backing Merge Labs, a brain-computer interface (BCI) startup valued at around US$850 million, in a direct challenge to Musk’s Neuralink.

The move brings the pair’s competitive dynamic beyond AI platforms and into the hardware that could one day connect human thought directly to digital systems — a frontier with transformative potential and equally significant risks.

This brain‑tech showdown is unfolding alongside an intensifying public feud, with Musk now accusing Apple of favouring OpenAI’s ChatGPT in the App Store’s rankings, labelling it an antitrust violation. Altman hit back, accusing Musk of manipulating the algorithm on X to promote his own posts and suppress rivals. The back‑and‑forth has played out in public posts and lawsuit threats, adding drama to the underlying technology duel.

A new front in the Altman–Musk rivalry

Merge Labs is working on implantable devices that can read and transmit brain signals to computers in real time. The company’s early focus is medical: helping restore mobility to people with paralysis, assisting those with severe neurological disorders and enabling hands-free control of digital devices. Longer term, the vision stretches into consumer technology — seamless, high-bandwidth communication between people and machines.

Neuralink, Musk’s flagship neurotech venture, has set the early pace in this race. The company made headlines earlier this year after implanting its chip in a second human patient, showing live demonstrations of the patient moving a computer cursor and typing by thought alone. Musk has also spoken openly about Neuralink’s eventual potential for memory enhancement and direct integration with AI systems, though these applications remain years away.

The bigger picture: AI meets neurotech

The Merge Labs investment marks a deliberate move by Altman to expand his AI ecosystem into hardware. A capable BCI could act as a high-bandwidth bridge between the human brain and AI models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, allowing for faster, more natural interaction than keyboards or screens can deliver and helping OpenAI maintain an edge in a crowded AI field.

For Musk, Altman’s arrival in neurotech is a clear challenge to Neuralink’s early lead. The two already compete in AI, with Musk’s Grok chatbot going head-to-head with OpenAI’s products. Adding brain-tech to the mix creates a new front in their rivalry, combining hardware breakthroughs with the data-driven muscle of advanced AI.

The state of the BCI race

Other neurotech players, such as Synchron (which uses a less invasive stent-based approach), Paradromics, and Blackrock Neurotech, are pursuing their own pathways toward commercial BCIs. Funding in the sector has surged over the past five years as advances in materials science, miniaturisation and machine learning make real-time neural decoding more feasible.

Most systems today are aimed at therapeutic uses — from enabling communication for people with locked-in syndrome to helping stroke survivors regain function. The consumer applications that Altman and Musk hint at — from enhanced productivity to ‘neural search’ of one’s own memories — remain speculative, but their potential is enough to attract significant capital.

Hurdles and high stakes

Turning these visions into reality will require years of rigorous testing. Regulatory agencies such as the US Food and Drug Administration will demand extensive safety and efficacy data, and any high-profile failure could set the entire industry back. Beyond technical hurdles, BCIs raise unprecedented privacy and ethics questions: Who owns neural data? How can it be secured? And should commercial AI platforms be allowed to access it?

But with two of the tech industry’s most combative and well-funded leaders now in the same sandbox, the pace of development — and the flow of investment — is likely to accelerate. Whether for medical breakthroughs or human-AI integration, the winner of this race could shape not only the neurotech market but the way humans interact with technology for decades to come.
