Firebird Metals to develop lithium manganese rich cathode for solid-state batteries

Firebird Metals Ltd (ASX:FRB, OTC:FRBMF) has announced its strategic move into the development of Lithium Manganese Rich (LMR) cathode materials, targeting next-generation solid-state battery applications and expanding Firebird’s existing expertise in manganese battery chemicals.

The move enables Firebird to tap into the growing demand for advanced battery technologies, particularly within the electric vehicle (EV) sector and emerging high-energy applications such as eVTOL aircraft and robotics.

New initiative for next-gen batteries

Building on its leadership in High Purity Manganese Sulphate Monohydrate (HPMSM) technology, Firebird will leverage its proprietary processing capabilities to develop LMR cathodes in-house. The company will use its R&D team and specialist consultants to drive this initiative, with minimal new equipment required, enabling the program to be executed swiftly and with strong capital efficiency.

The LMR cathode material is seen as crucial for next-generation batteries, particularly in EVs and high-energy applications like electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and humanoid robotics.

With demand for batteries that meet energy densities above 300 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg), LMR’s high specific capacity and elevated working voltage make it an ideal candidate for these emerging sectors.

Strategic alignment with automotive giants

Global automotive leaders, including Ford and General Motors (GM), have both identified LMR as a key cathode material for their next-generation EV platforms. Ford’s announcement in April 2025 and GM’s partnership with LG in May highlight the growing momentum behind LMR, with commercialisation expected by the end of the decade.

Firebird’s focus on LMR development reflects its broader strategy to become a low-cost, globally competitive producer of manganese-based battery materials. The LMR development program, set to be completed within 18 months, will further strengthen Firebird’s vertically integrated platform, which already encompasses the production of HPMSM, manganese iron phosphate (MFP), and other key cathode materials.

Positioned for market leadership

According to Firebird managing director Peter Allen, the company’s investment in LMR development is a deliberate step to secure its leadership in the manganese-based battery materials market.

“We anticipated this shift early and have spent the past several years building a strong foundation — first by establishing our leadership in HPMSM technology, then by advancing our LMFP capabilities in partnership with Central South University, a global leader in battery innovation,” Allen said.

The development of LMR technology adds a strategic pillar to Firebird’s vertically integrated approach, further consolidating its position at the forefront of next-generation manganese battery materials. With strong market demand for safer, more cost-effective, and higher-performance alternatives, Firebird’s expansion into LMR development is a timely move that positions the company to capitalise on the growing demand for next-gen battery technologies.

Focusing on global growth

The LMR program is expected to further solidify Firebird’s global presence in the battery materials market, particularly as the company scales up its operations in China. Long-term, Firebird aims to replicate its success in Western markets by deploying its proprietary technology and establishing localised production capacity.

With the rising demand for manganese-rich cathodes and the emergence of new battery chemistries, Firebird aims to play a critical role in the future of battery materials, benefiting from its advanced processing capabilities and vertically integrated business model.
