Chinese AI looks inward to take on the world

China’s artificial intelligence sector has launched two new industry alliances to strengthen its domestic ecosystem and lessen reliance on foreign technology, Reuters reports.

Announced during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, the “Model-Chip Ecosystem Innovation Alliance” brings together Chinese developers of large language models and AI chipmakers, including Huawei and Enflame, all aiming to collaborate across the technology chain.

A second group, the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce AI Committee, focuses on integrating AI with industrial applications and features participants such as SenseTime and MiniMax.

The conference also saw major product launches, including Huawei’s CloudMatrix 384, which experts say can outperform some of Nvidia’s most advanced chips, and several AI-powered digital glasses, signalling China’s determination to compete in advanced AI technology despite US sanctions.
