Race Oncology chief executive officer Dr Daniel Tillett talked with Proactive about the company’s key milestones this quarter, including the treatment of the first patient with its lead asset, RC220, a reformulated version of bisantrene.
Tillett said the original bisantrene compound had limitations due to poor solubility, causing complications in the bloodstream. The newly formulated RC220 overcomes these issues, retains its biological properties, and now carries 20 years of patent life.
Importantly, RC220 can now be applied beyond leukemias, with potential for use in solid tumours. The company is evaluating RC220 in combination with doxorubicin to improve anti-cancer efficacy while also protecting the heart from the latter’s toxic effects.
Race Oncology also made strategic leadership additions, appointing Dr Jose Iglesias as chief medical officer and Dr Simon Fisher as vice president medical to accelerate clinical development.
More than 83% of the company’s quarterly expenditure was directed toward research and development and drug manufacturing. Tillett stressed Race’s focus on maximising shareholder value by prioritising R&D investment.
He also confirmed Race will present new data on RC220’s dual cardioprotective and anti-cancer mechanism at the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) conference later this year.
