Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) has increased the price of hundreds of items on its US eCommerce site following the introduction of President Donald Trump’s tariffs, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis.
The publication’s analysis of 2,500 low-cost, everyday items such as deodorant, protein shakes, and pet care supplies found that prices have increased for about 1,200 of these products.
The average price increase was about 5%, with some items seeing larger increases.
In a statement, Amazon defended its pricing strategy. “We have not seen the average prices of products offered in our store change up or down appreciably,” the company said.
“Our commitment to offering low prices—not relative percentage changes—is what delivers the most value to our customers.”
Amazon had previously committed to keeping its prices steady amid Trump’s tariffs by front-loading inventory and renegotiating supplier contracts.
The WSJ noted that while Amazon raised prices, competitors like Walmart lowered prices on similar items by nearly 2%.
Shares of Amazon traded hands at $229 on Monday, up more than 4% in the year to date.
