EnergyPathways PLC (AIM:EPP) has taken a significant step in its drive to become a leader in grid-scale energy storage, announcing Siemens Energy will conduct a feasibility assessment for its flagship MESH project.
MESH aims to integrate offshore hydrogen, compressed air, and gas storage to deliver low- to zero-carbon power to the UK grid, supporting the transition to a renewables-driven energy system.
Siemens will evaluate the best technical, commercial, and financial strategies for MESH, drawing on its expertise in energy storage and integrated systems.
The project is designed to make use of surplus offshore wind by storing energy as compressed air or hydrogen, alongside natural gas reserves, providing flexibility and reliability when renewables alone cannot meet demand.
MESH is expected to store up to 20 terawatt-hours of energy and serve as a backbone for future hydrogen supply, contributing to government clean power targets for 2030.
EnergyPathways’ chief executive Ben Clube said the partnership with the German engineering giant reinforces the company’s commitment to supporting the UK’s net zero ambitions and building a more secure, flexible energy system.
He added: "This represents yet another engagement by EnergyPathways with a Tier-1 energy company, demonstrating the company's commitment to working with the leaders in the energy transition, as we seek to deliver a compelling economic and technical energy solution for the UK."
In developing what is a ground-breaking opportunity, the company has also teamed up with Wood Group, the oil field support services firm, clean hydrogen specialist Hazer and KBR of the US, the US science and technology group.
