Firebird Metals Ltd (ASX:FRB, OTC:FRBMF) has bolstered its intellectual property (IP) portfolio with the granting of two pivotal patents for proprietary lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) preparation methods.
The patents, which were fast-tracked through China’s patent process, are central to Firebird's strategy in advancing the development of next-generation battery materials as it establishes itself as a leader in Western LMFP development.
Patents pave the way for innovation and cost advantage
The two patents granted to Firebird cover core technologies for LMFP material design and synthesis, with four additional patents currently progressing through review. These patents are 100% owned by Firebird and represent a comprehensive, vertically integrated approach to battery material production.
The company's LMFP technology combines its expertise in high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate (HPMSM) production with pre-cathode active material (pCAM) synthesis. This provides a significant cost advantage by eliminating the energy-intensive crystallisation process, a major cost driver in traditional cathode material production.
Firebird's ability to control both the production of manganese sulphate and the synthesis of LMFP gives the company a competitive edge in the HPMSM and LMFP markets.
R&D progress and international interest
Firebird’s “Ore to Cathode” R&D Centre, based in China, has completed Stage 1 LMFP batch test work, producing over 100 batches of industry-standard LMFP materials. The next phase will involve tailoring these materials to meet the specific needs of potential customers both in China and internationally.
The company's vertical integration allows it to produce battery-grade MFP precursor materials, which are being prepared for evaluation by potential customers, including cathode manufacturers.

The increasing global interest in manganese-rich battery chemistries underscores the growing relevance of LMFP, with forecasts predicting a US$20 billion-plus market by 2030.
LMFP is widely seen as a promising alternative to traditional lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, with significant advantages in energy density, cost and thermal stability. Soochow Securities has forecast that LMFP could eventually replace 50% of LFP market share, accelerating Firebird's strategic position as the battery market evolves.
A unique position in the global battery supply chain
The granting of these patents strengthens Firebird’s standing in both Western and Chinese markets, it noted. The company’s independent development of this technology means it is not bound by recent Chinese export restrictions, which have affected the availability of advanced LMFP technology globally.
This flexibility positions Firebird to supply high-performance, manganese-rich cathode materials to a rapidly expanding global battery industry.
The company is now planning a pilot-scale MFP plant, targeting an annual production capacity of more than 200 tonnes, and is assessing further expansion opportunities to integrate MFP/LMFP production into larger commercial-scale operations. Firebird’s strategic focus is not only on commercialising its LMFP technology but also on driving innovation in the production of HPMSM and other critical materials for the electric vehicle (EV) battery sector.
