It certainly hasn't spooked the livestock. Then again, nobody's setting off the flares and fireworks as Rio Tinto Ltd's (LSE:RIO, ASX:RIO, OTC:RTNTF) opted to appoint an insider to the top job.
Simon Trott will be the new CEO, effective August 25, replacing Jakob Stausholm, who announced his resignation earlier this year to the industry's mild consternation.
Trott, who currently heads the company’s iron ore division, takes the helm as Rio looks to navigate a challenging market environment (complicated by scattergun tariffs) and looks rebuild investor confidence.
A 20-year veteran of Rio, he has overseen the company’s biggest new iron ore mine in Western Australia in more than a decade and is leading efforts to sustain output through a major replacement programme.
He also previously served as chief commercial officer. However, he has faced criticism from investors over declining ore quality and difficulties in hitting production targets.
Stausholm, who took over as CEO in 2020 amid fallout from the destruction of the Juukan Gorge rock shelters, led Rio’s push into lithium and expanded its iron ore and copper operations before deciding to step down.
The steady share price suggests investors may be awaiting more clarity on Trott’s strategy before making a decisive market move.
Despite the significance of the leadership change, the market appeared largely indifferent, with the stock up 0.4% in early deals.
