Evion Group NL (ASX:EVG, OTC:EVIGF) is leveraging its recognition by the EU as a critical raw materials supplier to advance its Maniry Graphite Project in Madagascar, recently holding meetings with EU-backed funding partners and discussions on infrastructure upgrades to support the project’s export capacity.
Securing this recognition has positioned Maniry as a key asset in Europe’s push for more diversified and secure sources of graphite. The project’s importance to the global supply chain is now amplified, with Evion actively engaging with European officials to accelerate its development timeline.
EU recognition strengthens project outlook
Maniry stands out as the only African graphite project included in the EU’s Critical Raw Materials program, providing Evion with critical advantages, noted the company’s managing director, David Round. The recognition streamlines permitting processes, boosts financing opportunities, and enhances engagement with potential investors and offtake partners.
“Madagascar is now the largest producer of graphite globally outside of China, and exports are expected to dramatically increase as manufacturers actively seek to diversify their graphite sourcing beyond China due to concerns about supply chain vulnerabilities and geopolitical risks,” Round said.
“We are excited by the level of engagement with EU officials recently, and the EU Critical Minerals advisory team is playing a very significant role in fast-tracking our development with a range of substantial commitments.”
Strategic infrastructure developments to boost access
In addition to its EU recognition, Evion is also benefiting from a potential boost in infrastructure that could provide easier access for the export of graphite. The EU advisory team in Madagascar is currently evaluating a port development on the west coast of the island, which would streamline logistics for the Maniry Project.

The port, planned to enhance the mining sector in southwest Madagascar, could offer Evion significant cost savings and logistical advantages. Additionally, the World Bank’s commitment to improving road connectivity in Madagascar, including a major bypass road connecting the RN7 highway to Toliara, is expected to further enhance Maniry’s accessibility.
Focus on community development and training
Evion’s engagement with the local Maniry community remains a priority as the company moves forward with its development plans. The company is collaborating with local EU advisers to establish training and employment programs that will support both the construction and future mining operations at the site.
Evion is also seeking grant funding to support early-stage community development and training initiatives, which are crucial to ensuring long-term social and economic benefits for the local area.
Strengthened EU–Madagascar trade ties
The Maniry Project is well-positioned within the context of broader trade relations between Madagascar and the European Union.
As a member of the Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) group, Madagascar has duty-free and quota-free access to the EU market for goods that meet specific rules of origin, providing a stable and enduring foundation for the Maniry Project’s integration into the EU’s critical raw materials supply chain.
The project aims to meet the growing demand for high-grade graphite in the global electrification market, including battery anode manufacturers. With strong support from both EU and local stakeholders, Evion is on track to progress Maniry towards development and production as it looks to help fuel Europe’s clean energy transition.
