Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META, ETR:FB2A, SWX:FB) has acquired PlayAI, a small artificial intelligence startup focused on developing highly realistic voice generation technology, as part of its ongoing push to advance its AI capabilities.
PlayAI specializes in ultra-natural voice cloning, capable of replicating human tone, emotion, rhythm, and intonation in more than 30 languages.
The company’s technology is expected to play a key role in enhancing Meta’s AI-powered voice experiences across various products, including its AI Characters, wearable devices, and audio tools for creators.
“PlayAI’s work in creating natural voices, along with a platform for easy voice creation, is a great match for our work and road map, across AI Characters, Meta AI, Wearables and audio content creation,” a Meta spokesperson told Bloomberg.
According to an internal memo seen by Bloomberg, the entire PlayAI team will join Meta’s AI division and report to Johan Schalkwyk, a recent Meta hire known for his expertise in voice AI.
The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
The deal aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s broader strategy to prioritize artificial intelligence development. Meta has made substantial investments in AI infrastructure and talent, including a partnership with Scale AI, whose CEO Alexandr Wang recently joined Meta to lead a new unit called Meta Superintelligence Labs.
