St George Mining Ltd (ASX:SGQ) is advancing development at its 100%-owned Araxá Project in Minas Gerais, Brazil, with drilling campaigns progressing and critical environmental studies under way.
These activities are part of the company's plan to unlock the potential of its high-grade rare earths and niobium resources, which have garnered significant attention amid growing global demand for these critical minerals.
Expanding drilling and assay work
St George’s inaugural drilling campaign at Araxá is making strong headway, with 40 auger drillholes completed so far, totalling 512 metres. This auger drilling is focused on areas outside the current resource envelope and will help define the extent of niobium and rare earths mineralization.
Once prospective areas are identified, follow-up reverse circulation (RC) drilling will deepen the exploration efforts.

Currently, 404 samples have been dispatched to the laboratory for assaying, with first results expected later this month. RC drilling has commenced and is targeting infill drilling to enhance the existing mineral resource estimate (MRE).
A total of 2,500 metres is planned for this stage, with diamond drilling to start shortly, aiming to complete 7,200 metres in the coming weeks.
Environmental studies progressing
St George is also prioritising environmental studies to ensure an expedited permitting process. The company has completed fieldwork for its flora and speleology (caves) studies and has begun monitoring air quality and noise levels.
These environmental efforts will provide essential data to support permitting for a potential mining operation. The comprehensive environmental approach ensures that best practices are followed as the project moves closer to development.

High-grade resource with strategic significance
The Araxá Project hosts a JORC-compliant resource of 40.64 million tonnes at 4.13% total rare earth oxides (TREO), with contained TREO of 1.7 million tonnes. This high-grade resource places the project among globally significant rare earths deposits, positioning St George to contribute to the establishment of alternative rare earths supply chains outside of China.
The Araxá deposit, which begins at surface, is well suited to low-cost open-pit mining. Located in a Tier 1 mining jurisdiction, the project benefits from excellent logistics, including access to power, transport infrastructure and a skilled workforce. This makes the project highly attractive for future development.
Positive global context for rare earths
The global push to secure new rare earths supply chains has gained momentum, spurred by geopolitical developments. Recent announcements, such as the landmark partnership between the US Department of Defense and MP Materials, underscore the growing strategic importance of rare earths.
The Araxá Project's high-grade resource positions it as a key player in this rapidly expanding sector, with significant interest from both private and governmental entities.
St George’s involvement in Brazil’s MAGBRAS Initiative — aimed at establishing a domestic supply chain for rare earths products — further highlights the strategic importance of the Araxá Project. The initiative, supported by Brazil's federal government, reinforces the project's potential as a key contributor to global rare earths supply chains.
A bright future for Araxá
With development activities progressing and strong government support, the Araxá Project is well on its way to advancing through the necessary studies and permitting phases. St George Mining’s commitment to best-practice environmental standards and its strategic positioning within Brazil’s mining sector suggest that the project will continue to attract significant interest as it progresses towards potential development.
“We are excited to be progressing development activities at a time when the geopolitical background is driving unprecedented interest in establishing rare earths supply chains ex-China,” said John Prineas, Executive Chairman of St George Mining.
“First assays from our expansion and resource definition drilling are due shortly, with the important diamond drilling to commence soon,” he added. “These development activities are important milestones for our scoping and feasibility study of the project, and for continuing to build value.”
