OpenAI is nearing the release of an AI-powered web browser designed to compete with Google Chrome, according to a Reuters report.
Sources with knowledge of the plan told the news outlet that the browser is built on Chromium, the open-source browser codebase that also underpins Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera.
The browser aims to fundamentally change how users browse the web by integrating AI deeply into the browsing experience, the sources said.
It will reportedly embed ChatGPT directly into the web experience and integrate OpenAI’s AI agent “operator, which can perform tasks on behalf of users, such as filling out forms, making reservations, ordering groceries, and even creating memes.
Per the report, by creating its own browser rather than an extension, OpenAI aims to gain direct access to users' web behavior data, which is crucial for training AI and developing personalized experiences.
The browser is expected to launch in the coming weeks.
