Ocean Power Technologies Inc (NYSE-A:OPTT) has announced the successful installation of its contracted PowerBuoy system for the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS).
The system is now deployed in Monterey Bay and features OPT’s latest PowerBuoy technology integrated with its proprietary Merrows suite.
The Merrows platform is designed for AI-capable Maritime Domain Awareness, allowing seamless integration across both manned and unmanned platforms, according to OPT.
The installation incorporates AT&T 5G technology and advanced subsea sensors, enabling continuous and autonomous monitoring and data collection in a strategically important maritime region.
The system is also configured to accommodate additional environmental sensors from NPS or other research collaborators.
OPT said that this deployment marks a key milestone in its strategic plan to provide persistent offshore infrastructure solutions that support defense, security, and research missions.
“This deployment enables our current and future customers to evaluate the PowerBuoy with AI-capable Merrows technology as a critical asset for enhancing maritime security and operational awareness above and below the surface,” OPT CEO Philipp Stratmann said.
“The collaboration with AT&T also demonstrates how PowerBuoys can serve as 5G communications nodes along the US coastline. As the demand grows for rapidly deployable maritime systems, OPT’s differentiated technology and expanding partnerships will accelerate the growth of our services business.”
Wes Anderson, AT&T president public sector, said the company was proud to launch a 5G cell site at sea with the Navy, NPS, and OPT.
“This collaboration fuels our commitment to developing 5G and edge computing solutions for manned and unmanned naval platforms that support national defense, homeland security, and the maritime community,” Anderson said.
Shares of OPT were trading around 3.2% higher on Wednesday afternoon.
