IBM launches Power11 chips and servers with focus on AI, uptime and security

International Business Machines Corp (NYSE:IBM) has unveiled its new Power11 chips and servers, the first major update to its Power systems lineup since 2020.

The new products emphasize energy efficiency, security, and AI integration, targeting enterprises in sectors such as finance, healthcare, and manufacturing, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.

The systems are designed for 99.9999% uptime with no planned software update downtime and an average of just over 30 seconds of unplanned downtime per year, according to IBM.

The servers feature IBM Power Cyber Vault, enabling ransomware detection in under a minute through automated response and immutable data backups.

IBM also said that Power11 will be the first to support its new Spyre AI chip, optimized for inference rather than training. Spyre is expected in Q4 2025.

Performance upgrades include up to 55% better core performance than Power9 and 45% more capacity in entry and mid-range systems over the Power10.

Power11 servers will be generally available starting July 25, with Spyre rolling out across Power11, IBM z17, and LinuxONE later this year.

"IBM Power11 changes the game for enterprise computing," said Tom McPherson, general manager of power systems at IBM.

"With Power11, clients can accelerate into the AI era with innovations tailored to their most pressing business needs. We are taking advantage of the full IBM stack to deliver hybrid cloud, AI, and automation capabilities while building on our decades-long reputation as a trustworthy hybrid infrastructure for essential workloads."

Shares of IBM traded hands at about $290 on Tuesday morning, having gained about 32% in the year to date.
