Boeing Co (NYSE:BA, ETR:BCO) has secured a $2.8 billion contract from the US Space Force to deliver next-generation strategic communications satellites. The agreement starts with two satellites, with options for two more down the line.
The Evolved Strategic Satellite Communications program will back up nuclear command, control and communications. These satellites will provide secure links for the President and military leaders around the globe.
“It’s a critical time to advance US space capabilities to ensure peace through strength," commented Cordell DeLaPena, US Space Force Program executive officer. "The strategic communication mission requires protection, power and always-available capability, even through adversary attempts to interrupt our connectivity. These satellites will provide connectivity from space as part of a refreshed NC3 architecture for our nation.”
Kay Sears, Boeing’s vice president and general manager of Space, Intelligence and Weapon Systems, said: “The US needs a strategic national security architecture that works without fail, with the highest level of protection and capability. We designed an innovative system to provide guaranteed communication to address an evolving threat environment in space.”
Boeing Space Mission Systems vice president Michelle Parker said the contract proves the value of Boeing’s investments and advances in satellite technology. She noted the company has created a mature, low-risk solution for the government.
"We scaled our production capacity, invested in our team, hired cleared talent, and assembled hot production lines to make sure that we can hit the ground running from day one," Parker added. "We are committed to delivering this critical capability to meet the strategic need.”
The first satellite is due for delivery by 2031.
