Dr Martens PLC (LSE:DOCS) shares have stepped higher since full-year results were published a month ago, where a 10% fall in revenue and a sharp fall in profits was as expected, with investors impressed with a more positive outlook on the US.
Was the DOCS early year optimism justified or will guidance need to be tweaked, wondered market analyst Michael Hewson at MCH Market Insights.
Hewson also highlighted one of the early movers in the US earnings season, Levi Strauss & Co (NYSE:LEVI), where tariffs will perhaps be a big focus.
First-quarter numbers created a fair degree of volatility with the shares briefly slipping to their lowest levels in five years before rebounding strongly. "Coming as they did just after the announcement of the various liberation day tariffs, that is understandable given how susceptible these sorts of fashion brands are to the imposition of tariffs on their products," says Hewson.
He says there has been an expectation that while Levi's will face an impact from tariffs, "the strength of the brand would allow these to be mitigated to some extent by the ability to increase prices, along with a robust supply chain".

Reports from the recruitment sector have not been glowing in recent months, with expectations so low going into this second quarter update from PageGroup PLC that it’s shares recently sank to their lowest levels since 2009.
That 16-year low reflects a downturn of around 30 months in hiring markets, with permanent hiring volumes remaining at low levels into the summer, leading to a profit warning at rival Hays last month and analysts at one major investment bank to cut profit and dividend forecasts for Page and downgrade its rating...read more
