Trump urges Fed chair Powell to resign amid criticism over interest rates

Donald Trump has renewed his attacks on Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, calling for his immediate resignation in a post on Truth Social.

The US president posted a link to a news report suggesting Powell should be investigated over renovation costs at the central bank’s Washington headquarters, adding that “‘Too Late’ should resign immediately.”

Trump originally appointed Powell to lead the Fed but has frequently criticised him for keeping interest rates high.

Powell, however, recently pointed to Trump’s own trade policies as a reason the Fed has not lowered rates, suggesting tariffs have complicated monetary policy.

While Powell’s term runs until May 2026, and he has said he would not resign if asked, Trump’s push raises questions about political pressure on the independent institution.

Under US law, a Fed chair can only be removed “for cause”, and Trump’s history of challenging such boundaries adds further tension.
