Alphabet Inc's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Google has announced its first commercial deal in fusion energy, agreeing to purchase 200 megawatts of power from Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), a company spun out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The electricity will come from ARC, a planned fusion power station in Chesterfield County, Virginia, which CFS claims will be the world’s first grid-scale fusion facility.
ARC is expected to produce 400 megawatts of carbon-free energy by the early 2030s, enough to supply around 150,000 homes.
Google, which has backed CFS since 2021, said it had increased its investment in the company.
Financial details were not released. The agreement also includes an option to buy power from future ARC sites. Google continues to support other fusion ventures, including TAE Technologies.
