Firebird Metals Ltd managing director Peter Allen talked with Proactive about recent advancements in the company's lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) cathode active material (CAM) development program.
Allen shared positive test outcomes, highlighting a significant milestone: a 10–15% increase in energy density using commercially available equipment. This is a key step forward in developing cathodes for electric vehicle applications.
He explained the broader context of battery chemistry, noting that lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries dominate due to safety and cost advantages. However, energy density has been a persistent challenge. By adding manganese to create LMFP, Firebird aims to bridge this gap, combining safety and affordability with improved energy performance.
Allen also outlined the next phase of development, involving a further 50-day improvement process to refine the battery material. Upon completion, Firebird plans to scale up operations at its pilot plant, currently producing 100 tonnes per annum of LMFP. The company is preparing to engage with Chinese and international original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for product qualification and approvals.
