Blackberry (TSX:BB) shares jumped more than 13% in early trade as the cybersecurity firm’s first quarter earnings topped Wall Street estimates.
For the quarter, the company posted revenue of $121.7 million, ahead of estimates of $120 million.
This included QNX revenue of $57.5 million, up 8% year-over-year, Secure Communications revenue of $59.5 million, and Licensing revenue of $4.7 million.
“BlackBerry made a strong start to the new fiscal year, building on the solid foundation we as a company have laid over the past year,” BlackBerry CEO John Giamatteo said in a statement.
“Both our QNX and Secure Communications divisions continue to execute effectively against their strategies, beating both top line and profitability expectations. BlackBerry’s solid balance sheet and plan for continuing profitability and cash generation this fiscal year enable us to allocate capital efficiently, with $10 million of share buybacks executed this past quarter.”
For the full year, BlackBerry guided revenue in the range of $508 million to $538 million, up from its earlier guidance of $504 million to $534 million and at the midpoint of $523 million above the Street estimate of $521.8 million.
It projected earnings per share in the range of $0.08 to $0.10, in line with Street estimates.
Shares of BlackBerry added 13.8%, just shy of $5, shortly after US markets opened on Wednesday.
