Poolbeg investor backing clears the path for development and deliver, brokers say

Poolbeg Pharma PLC (AIM:POLB) has fired the starting pistol on a busy development schedule after receiving overwhelming shareholder support for its latest fundraising.

At the company's general meeting earlier this week (June 23), investors backed an oversubscribed placing, subscription and retail offer that brought in just under £5 million.

According to Cavendish, this vote of confidence gives the company the breathing room it needs to press ahead with its plans.

"With the equity financing secured, we believe any potential investor concerns surrounding capital requirements have been alleviated," the broker said, adding that Poolbeg’s cash runway now extends into 2027.

Two programmes

The funds will be used to advance its two main programmes: POLB 001 for cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and an oral GLP-1 receptor agonist for obesity.

Shore Capital, which also covers the company, sees the lead asset, POLB 001, as a potential first-in-class oral treatment to prevent CRS in patients undergoing T-cell-based immunotherapy.

That would address a serious complication seen in over 70% of patients receiving therapies such as CAR-T and bispecific antibodies.

Initial data from human challenge and animal models have shown POLB 001 can significantly reduce inflammatory markers like IL-6 and TNF-α, without suppressing immune function.

A phase IIa study is expected to start later this year, with early data due in the first half of 2026.

Obesity asset moves out of the lab

The GLP-1 programme, using encapsulation technology from AnaBio, will also move into a proof-of-concept trial later this year, under the guidance of obesity expert Professor Carel le Roux at the University of Ulster.

ShoreCap believes strong data here could open the door to partnerships despite competition from big players like Lilly and Pfizer.

Both brokers agree that this year’s fundraising has removed a major question mark and allows Poolbeg to focus on clinical execution.

Cavendish described the next six to 18 months as "a window for multiple potential, clinically driven, catalyst events that may materialise from the pipeline."

Poolbeg also has AI-enabled infectious disease programmes waiting in the wings, which ShoreCap notes could hold longer-term value.

With big pharma already supporting its CRS trials with free drug supply, the company appears to be building interest in the right places.
