Wall Street poised to open lower amid a flurry of economic data

U.S. stock-index futures held losses after after data on durable goods added to evidence the economy is emerging from a first-quarter slowdown. Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average pulled back 0.1 percent to 18,206, while those for

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average pulled back 0.1 percent to 18,206, while those for the S&P 500 index lost 0.2 percent to 2,120.50. Futures for the Nasdaq 100 index gave up 0.2 percent to 4,520.25.

The Commerce Department said today non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for business spending plans, rose 1.0 percent last month after an upwardly revised 1.5 percent increase in March.

Stocks edged lower on Friday, pulling back further from all-time highs reached early in the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.3 percent to 18232.02, while the S&P 500 lost 0.2 percent to 2126.06.

DATA:

New home sales data at 10:00 a.m. is expected to show sales increased to an adjusted annual rate of 510,000 units in April from 481,000 units in March.

The Conference Board releases its index of consumer attitudes, which is expected to show consumer spending fell slightly in May from April. The data is due at 10:00 a.m.

The S&P/Case Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas is expected at 9:45 a.m.

MOVERS:

Charter Communications' (NASDAQ:CHTR), a cable services provider, rose 3.1 percent in premarket trading after it agreed to buy Time Warner Cable (NYSE:TWC) for $55.8 billion. Time Warner Cable rose 7.5 percent.

ADRs of Ctrip.com (NASDAQ:CTRP), a consolidator of hotel accommodations and airline tickets, gained 4.3 percent after Priceline said it will invest an additional $250 million in the Chinese online travel company.

LivePerson (NASDAQ:LPSN) were up 12.9 percent in premarket trading after an Israeli website reported software provider Nice Systems was in talks to acquire the chat software firm.

AutoZone (NYSE:AZO) inched up 0.5 percent to 689.18 after the retailer of automotive replacement parts said third-quarter same-store sales rose 2.3%, while earnings per share climbed 13% to $9.57.

TiVo (NASDAQ:TIVO), a software provider, is expected to post first-quarter earnings of 7 cents a share, unchanged from a year earlier.

Cerulean Pharma (NASDAQ:CERU) jumped 8.1 percent ahead of the bell after the biotech company said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted orphan drug designation to its CRLX101 drug, a treatment for ovarian cancer.

EMC (NYSE:EMC) edged up 0.8 percent after the IT service provider announced a deal to acquire privately-held cloud software and services company Virtustream in a cash deal valued at $1.2 billion.

COMMODITIES:

Spot gold dropped to a two-week low of $1,190.10 an ounce earlier and was down 1.3 percent at $1,191.46. U.S. gold futures for June delivery were down $13.50 at $1,190.50 an ounce.

Brent crude was down 45 cents at $65.07 a barrel, while U.S. crude, also known as WTI, was 43 cents lower at $59.29.

OTHER MARKETS:

European stock markets were mainly lower as investors continued to track developments in Greece’s bailout negotiations. The euro traded as low as $1.0884 on Tuesday, its lowest level since April 28, down from $1.0978 on yesterday.

Asian markets closed mixed.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.188 percent from 2.211 percent as prices rose.
