Ken Hoffman joins Firebird Metals as special advisor to spearhead Western expansion strategy

Firebird Metals Ltd (ASX:FRB, OTC:FRBMF) has appointed globally recognised battery materials authority Ken Hoffman as special advisor to the board. With more than 30 years of experience, including his role as global head of battery materials at McKinsey & Company, Hoffman will play a key role in shaping Firebird’s strategy to penetrate Western markets.

Hoffman’s appointment comes as demand for high-purity manganese chemicals continues to grow around the world, propelled by increasing adoption of lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) and lithium manganese-rich (LMR) cathode technologies — particularly by automotive giants GM and Ford.

Ken Hoffman joins Firebird as special advisor to the board.

Given the current limited production capacity outside China, Firebird’s expansion and innovation could see it become a strategic player in battery material supply chains.

“We are delighted to welcome Ken as special advisor to the board. He brings a wealth of industry knowledge and strategic insight across battery technology, supply chain development, and investment strategy. Ken’s expertise will be instrumental as we advance our development pathway and strengthen Firebird’s position in the battery materials sector,” FRB managing director Peter Allen said.

Background and vision for Firebird

Hoffman brings decades of global expertise across the battery value chain, including investment management, research and strategic advisory roles.

At McKinsey, he led initiatives spanning strategic planning, supply chain optimisation and capital raising. His earlier positions include global head of metals & mining research at Bloomberg and portfolio leadership at Millennium Partners and MarCap Investors.

“For many years, I’ve recognised that manganese will be the most critical battery material, replacing more niche metals like nickel and cobalt while improving densities of LFP cells. The technology identified by Firebird has the potential to revolutionise the entire manganese chemical supply chain in the battery chemistry,” Hoffman said.

“I’m excited to join the Firebird team and look forward to working with Peter and Wei to advance their bold ‘ore to cathode’ vision, with a key focus on manganese-based cathode materials. I truly believe manganese has a very bright future in battery chemistries!”

Structural shift in battery materials landscape

Firebird is responding to a structural surge in demand for high-purity manganese, fuelled by the shift towards LMFP and LMR battery technologies, which offer a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional chemistries using cobalt and nickel.

Recent endorsements from global automakers support this trend.

Currently, most high-purity manganese sulphate production is concentrated in China, making Firebird’s ambition to develop alternative supply chains increasingly critical. The company’s R&D and initial operations will be based in China, but its long-term strategy is to replicate this success in Western markets through localised production enabled by advanced processing technology.

Firebird’s integrated battery materials strategy

Firebird is advancing its China-focused LMFP battery strategy, targeting near-term production of battery-grade manganese sulphate. This positions the company to become a key supplier of manganese-rich cathode materials at a time of rising demand.

The company’s flagship Oakover Project in the East Pilbara holds a JORC-compliant Mineral Resource Estimate of 176.7 million tonnes at 9.9% manganese (Mn), with over 105 million tonnes in the Indicated category. Its Hill 616 project adds a further 57.5 million tonnes at 12.2% Mn (Inferred), presenting strong growth potential.

Advisory terms and upcoming engagement

Hoffman will receive incentive securities, including 200,000 sign-on performance rights and further rights linked to share price targets and strategic milestones, such as securing a cornerstone investor.

Firebird plans to host an investor webinar shortly to formally introduce Hoffman and provide a corporate update.
