Novo Nordisk's new obesity drug hits high efficacy marks, but investors stay cautious

Novo Nordisk (NYSE:NVO) delivered promising data over the weekend for its next-generation weight-loss injection, CagriSema, showing it can achieve weight reductions on par with the most effective treatments currently available.

Yet the subdued market reaction on Monday suggests growing investor unease about how the Danish drugmaker will hold its lead in a rapidly crowding space.

The CagriSema results, published in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at the American Diabetes Association's annual meeting, showed an average weight loss of nearly 23% over 68 weeks in adults with obesity or overweight.

The trial allowed dose adjustments based on patient response, mirroring how the drug might be used in clinical practice. Just under a quarter of patients lost 30% or more of their body weight.

CagriSema is a combination of semaglutide, the active ingredient in Novo's blockbuster Wegovy, and cagrilintide, an investigational amylin analogue.

Novo is betting the pairing can deliver greater and longer-lasting results, even as it faces growing competition from Eli Lilly’s twin offerings, Mounjaro and Zepbound, which target two different hormone pathways.

Despite the clinical success, Novo Nordisk shares slipped 2.6% early Monday and are down 27% so far this year.

Investors appear concerned that the company’s growth trajectory is flattening just as competitors ramp up.

But with both companies advancing next-generation candidates and market expectations running high, simply posting solid data may no longer be enough to move the needle.
