Audi is considering building a manufacturing plant in the United States to placate President Donald Trump amid tariff disputes, according to the German news magazine Spiegel.
Volkswagen Group (XETRA:VOW)’s luxury brand is considering building a plant in the Southern US, the most expensive option out of several scenarios being considered, the report said.
Company sources estimate that building the plant could cost €4 billion (US$4.6 billion).
An Audi spokesperson said the company wants to increase its presence in the US.
"We are currently examining various scenarios for this. We are confident that we will make a decision this year in consultation with the (Volkswagen) group on how this will look in concrete terms," the spokesperson said in a statement shared with media.
Audi currently does not have its own manufacturing plants in the United States. However, its parent company Volkswagen operates a plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and another plant is under construction near Columbia, Tennessee.
