Shares in Boeing Co (NYSE:BA, ETR:BCO) fell 8% after one of its planes crashed after take-off on a flight from India to the UK.
Local authorities said they expected no-one to survive the accident, with 217 adults and 11 children on board the Air India as it crashed near Ahmedabad airport after setting off for London Gatwick. The plane was carrying 53 British passengers and one Canadian.
India's civil aviation chief told reporters that Air India flight AI 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed into a nearby residential area just after taking off at 1.38pm local time.
Gatwick confirmed in a social media post that flight AI171 had been due to arrive at 6:25pm in London but crashed on departure.
It was the first ever crash of a 787 Dreamliner widebody plane, according to the Aviation Safety Network database, since the model was introduced in 2009.
Boeing has had issues with its smaller 737 MAX, with crashes in 2018 and 2019 involving Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines, while last year it was beset by further worries after a mid-air door panel blowout, which ended with the company paying Alaska Air US$160 million in compensation.
We can confirm that flight AI171 that crashed on departure from Ahmedabad Airport today was due to land at London Gatwick at 18:25.
