Shein Group and Reliance Retail are planning to ramp up garment production in India and begin exporting India-made Shein clothes within a year, according to people familiar with the discussions.
The two companies aim to expand their local supplier base from 150 to 1,000 manufacturers, with plans to list Indian-made items on Shein’s US and UK websites, according to Reuters.
The move comes as Shein looks to diversify away from China amid rising US tariffs on Chinese imports.
Shein, a major force in online fast fashion, re-entered the Indian market in February through a licensing deal with Reliance, following a government ban on its app in 2020.
Under the partnership, Reliance handles local manufacturing and distribution via SheinIndia.in.
The companies are pursuing Shein’s on-demand production model, which starts with small production runs and scales up based on demand. Reliance is also investing in supplier capabilities, including synthetic fabric production, to support export ambitions.
