Evion Group managing director David Round talked with Proactive about a major milestone for the company, as the Maniry Graphite Project in southern Madagascar has been formally recognised by the European Union as a strategic future supplier of critical minerals. It is currently the only project in Madagascar to receive this distinction.
Round said, “It’s a pivotal moment in the company’s development,” attributing the achievement to the quality of their definitive feasibility study, the project’s documentation, and the experience of the team both in Madagascar and in graphite production more broadly. He also noted that Madagascar is now the largest graphite exporter outside of China, a factor that helped align Evion’s goals with those of the EU.
The submission to the EU was lodged nearly a year ago and included comprehensive details around Evion’s operations and downstream capabilities, including its graphite plant in India. Round said the company is now engaged in further discussions with EU officials around preferred offtake partners, potential grant funding, and infrastructure development support.
Looking ahead, Evion expects significant activity in the short term, including European meetings and further engagement in Madagascar. Round indicated that the global graphite market dynamics—particularly China’s export ban—are opening up new opportunities for Evion’s operations.
