Cobalt Blue Ltd CEO Dr Andrew Tong talked with Proactive about the company’s evolving strategic priorities, including project diversification and revenue generation plans.
Tong, newly appointed to the CEO role, discussed his extensive background in process engineering and corporate leadership. “I’ve been in the resources sector for a bit over 20 years,” he noted, describing his career across gold, copper, and corporate turnaround projects.
He highlighted Cobalt Blue’s continued commitment to the Broken Hill Cobalt Project, while acknowledging market headwinds for cobalt pricing have led the company to evaluate near-term monetisation strategies.
To that end, the company has recently acquired the Halls Creek Project, a copper-zinc initiative in the Kimberley region. “We’re busy working on a scoping study... a low-cost capital entry point,” Tong said.
Further updates include the Kwinana Cobalt Refinery in Western Australia, being developed in partnership with a Japanese entity. Tong referenced a newly signed binding joint venture agreement and interest from both the Australian and Japanese governments, alongside global cobalt offtakers.
Cobalt Blue is also assessing opportunities to turn its Broken Hill R&D facility into a battery recycling centre. This move aims to position the company within the growing black mass recycling market.
