Janus Electric powers onto ASX, accelerating Australia’s clean freight future

Janus Electric Holdings Ltd made its ASX debut on Wednesday, completing the transformation of clean energy investment vehicle ReNu Energy Ltd into a fully-fledged electric truck company with ambitions to decarbonise Australia’s heavy freight industry.

The listing follows a reverse takeover by ReNu – once a green hydrogen and renewable energy incubator – which shareholders approved in March 2024. With the acquisition now complete, Janus Electric will be the new face of the business, while bringing its swappable battery and retrofit model that reimagines how prime-mover trucks operate on Australia’s busiest freight corridors.

“Janus Electric is leading the transformation of Australia’s heavy road transport through electrification built on Australian ingenuity,” said newly appointed managing director Ian Campbell. “With Australia’s conditions primed for large-scale adoption, every kilometre travelled with Janus Electric solutions strengthens our impact and bottom line.”

Trading under the ASX code JNS, Janus Electric raised $8.8 million at 20 cents per share, drawing strong support from institutional and professional investors. Among them are ASX-listed Powerhouse Ventures, impact-focused NorthStar Impact Funds and European venture capital firm Kjøller – all signalling confidence in Janus Electric’s plan to retrofit diesel trucks for a fast-charge electric future.

‘Charge and Change’ take-up grows

At the heart of Janus Electric’s model is a patented ‘Charge and Change’ system: swappable batteries that can be exchanged in less than five minutes.

“We retrofit fleet operators’ existing prime movers with low-capex swappable batteries and electric powertrains, supported by advanced charging infrastructure and smart energy management,” Campbell said. “This innovative solution provides fleet operators with lower costs, reduced downtime, extended fleet lifespans and fast payback periods.”

The company has already completed more than 400,00 kilometres of commercial operation across its trial fleet, with more than 2,500 battery swaps and more than 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions abated so far. It has also secured 142 truck conversions from commercial operators – including early adopters like Cement Australia and Logistics giant Qube Holdings.

Validating the business model

Campbell said Janus is now poised to scale, using funds from the raise to deliver its existing pipeline of conversions, expand its battery inventory and network of charging depots, and invest in new workshop facilities.

Australia’s freight sector includes more than 124,000 articulated trucks, which collectively travel about 20 billion kilometres a year – and produce a hefty share of national transport emissions. Janus aims to capture a meaningful slice of that market, especially in closed-loop routes between Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, where short turnaround times and high vehicle utilisation are critical.

“Our business model, which generates earnings based on kilometres travelled and kilowatt hours consumed, is continuously validated as we find efficiencies within our Truck Conversions and technology solutions,” Campbell said.

The company’s vision of powering an Australia-led zero-emissions supply chain for heavy transport “establishes us as a leader in industry transformation, lowers operating costs, promotes sustainable growth, and enhances public health by reducing exposure to diesel emissions”, he added.

Janus is targeting 800 truck conversions at about $175,000 each as part of its initial 1% market share goal.

Bolstered board, next moves

The company’s leadership team includes founder and trucking veteran Lex Forsyth as chief operating officer, with Campbell – a former PwC director and energy executive – at the helm. They’re joined by independent chair Dennis Lin and non-executive directors Kristy Carr and Tony Fay, bringing commercial, capital markets and growth-stage expertise to the board.

While Janus is focused on scaling operations in Australia, the company is also eyeing international opportunities in the US, New Zealand and Southeast Asia – regions facing similar heavy vehicle emissions challenges and ripe for fleet electrification.

With its listing now complete and anchor investors on board, Janus Electric will redouble its focus on the race to decarbonise road freight and on proving a scalable, profitable path to zero-emissions transport infrastructure.

Campbell and Forsyth will present a company overview and take investor questions in a live webinar set for Friday at 9:30 am AEST.
