Xiaomi to invest nearly $7bn in chip design over next decade

Xiaomi plans to invest at least $6.9 billion in chip design over the next ten years, according to founder Lei Jun in a post on Chinese social media platform Weibo.

A company spokesperson confirmed to Reuters that the timeline for the investment begins in 2025.

The Beijing-based smartphone and electric vehicle maker has already spent $1.9 billion developing its in-house XringO1 mobile chip and currently employs more than 2,500 staff in its chip design division.

The announcement underlines Xiaomi’s long-term ambition to strengthen its position in advanced semiconductors, an area increasingly seen as critical to national industrial strategy.

The investment is also part of China’s broader push to reduce reliance on foreign technology in sensitive sectors such as communications and automotive electronics.
