Genedrive test kits set for new NHS trial in Manchester

genedrive PLC (AIM:GDR) diagnostic kits are to be trialled for use in the NHS, for patients at a genetic risk of heart failure.

Today, Genedrive announced that its CYP2C19-ID Kit will be used in a new trial focused on Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS).

It will see £120,000 worth of sales orders and, subject to the outcome, could open an additional longer term revenue stream.

The trial is led by Manchester University Foundation Trust in partnership with the GUIDE PCI programme and the British Heart Foundation Centre of Excellence.

It would potentially add to an existing recommendation for CYP2C19 genotyping for patients at risk of Ischaemic Stroke (IS) and Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) – where NICE (the National Institute for Health & Care Excellence) recommends it as a first line point of care test in the NHS.

Genedrive noted that there are some 7.6 million people living with a heart or circulatory disease in the UK, with over 100,000 NHS admissions per year due to heart attacks.

"We are delighted that our CYP2C19 rapid genetic test is being assessed for use in ACS and PCI procedures in addition to current clinical recommendations by NICE for use prior to prescription of Clopidogrel in IS and TIA,” chief executive Dr Gino Miele said in a statement.

Miele added: “Our CYP2C19 test is well positioned to enable this intervention and care pathway change, significantly improving patient outcomes whilst at the same time freeing healthcare resources and finances."

Bill Newman, a professor at University of Manchester, meanwhile, commented: “We're already seeing the impact of rapid genetic testing for patients who have had stroke or TIAs, with our colleagues in centres around the country telling us they need results quickly to inform their practice and avoid delays to discharge.”

Priced at 1.5p on Tuesday, Genedrive has a market value of just under £9.5 million.
