Caledonia Mining: An undervalued 'nugget' in the gold space

For investors searching for undervalued names in the gold space, broker Cavendish believes Caledonia Mining Corporation PLC (AIM:CMCL, NYSE-A:CMCL) stands out as a compelling opportunity.

The Zimbabwe-based gold producer is trading well below its estimated fair value, despite strong free cash flow, consistent dividends and a positive outlook on production.

Cavendish sees scope for a re-rating, especially as higher gold prices lift margins and the company continues to deliver operationally.

In the first quarter, Caledonia produced just over 19,100 ounces of gold, up 9.3% year-on-year. Net profit rose sharply to $8.9 million, and cash generated from operations more than doubled to $13.1 million.

Adjusting for the $22.35 million sale of its solar plant in April, the company’s net cash position stood at $18.6 million.

Cavendish maintains a target price of £18.50 per share, compared with a current market price of around £10. That valuation includes potential upside from Bilboes, a large-scale gold project now undergoing a technical review.

With steady output from Blanket Mine, a growing cash pile and a dividend yield of 4%, Cavendish argues that Caledonia increasingly resembles a disciplined mid-tier producer, rather than a speculative frontier play.

The shares rose 2% on Monday.
