Orthocell expands US sales rollout of Remplir, beating distributor targets

Orthocell Ltd has achieved a major milestone in its US commercialisation push, securing 12 distributors for its flagship nerve repair product Remplir, well ahead of its initial midyear target of 10.

The regenerative medicine company said its US distribution network now spans 21 states after recently increasing its American distributors' stable by eight. The growth represents a key part of Orthocell’s US market strategy, which received 501(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration on April 3.

Orthocell CEO Paul Anderson lauded the rapid progress made since obtaining the clearance, saying the accelerated rollout reflects strong market confidence in Remplir, a collagen wrap used in peripheral nerve repair surgeries.

“Our US team has been working tirelessly leading up to the product launch, and we’re confident we have the right strategy to drive market penetration of the US,” Anderson said.

“For us, that means a combination of experienced internal employees complemented by a portfolio of distributors who have active sales channels to reach and engage our customers,” he added.

Orthocell expects first US sales of Remplir to begin this quarter.

Specialist distributors

The US distributors are experienced specialists in nerve repair, with well-established relationships across surgical networks and hospitals in their territories, making them an efficient path to market.

Operating under a commission-based structure, they will carry out targeted promotion and sales initiatives, support medical education and expand networks of referring plastic and orthopaedic surgeons.

Orthocell has invested heavily in pre-launch activities in the US, with its on-the-ground sales, marketing and medical affairs teams training distributor reps, engaging key hospitals to secure supplier status, and preparing a key opinion leader (KOL) panel and product roadshow.

Orthocell believes its hybrid model – combining in-house oversight with specialist local distributors – offers the most efficient route to penetrating the US$1.6 billion US nerve repair market – the largest globally, with more than 700,000 procedures performed annually.

Global ambition

Anderson said the company expects to continue growing its portfolio of distributors, with the US network overseen by in-house sales directors led by Orthocell’s vice president of sales and supported by four territory managers. Meanwhile, internal management resources will remain tightly focussed on supporting the rollout and generating early sales momentum.

Orthocell is well-funded for the US market push, with A$31.7 million in cash and no debt as of March 31. It is also well positioned as it eyes further global expansion – including planned regulatory submissions in the EU and UK within the next six to 12 months.

In addition to its recent US clearance, Remplir is currently approved for sale in Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Canada. It is part of a broader suite of regenerative products under development by Orthocell, including Striate for dental applications, SmrtGraft for tendon repair, and autologous cell therapies targeting tendon and cartilage injuries.

With an estimated 2 million peripheral nerve repairs performed annually across key global markets, Orthocell is targeting an addressable market valued at more than US$3.5 billion as it shifts from regulatory approvals to revenue generation in the world’s largest healthcare market.
