OpenAI swoops for $3bn coding tool specialist Windsurf

OpenAI has agreed to acquire Windsurf, an artificial intelligence coding tools company previously known as Codeium, in a deal valued at around $3 billion, according to a Bloomberg report citing unnamed sources.

The acquisition, which has not yet been finalised, would be OpenAI’s largest to date.

Talks over the deal were first reported in April, though the potential tie-up had raised eyebrows due to competitive tensions. Windsurf operates in the same space as several other AI coding assistants backed by OpenAI’s own Startup Fund, putting the company in a delicate position with its broader portfolio.

News of the acquisition comes shortly after OpenAI announced it would abandon plans to alter its governance structure, opting to keep its non-profit arm in control amid mounting scrutiny.

That shift followed a wave of legal and political pressure, including a lawsuit from co-founder Elon Musk.
