Toronto house prices post modest gains

Home sales in the Greater Toronto Area rose slightly in April from March but were sharply lower than a year ago, according to the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board.

Seasonally adjusted sales increased 1.8% to 4,267 units after declines in February and March.

But the average selling price slipped 0.7% to C$1.07 million, the fifth decrease in six months.

Compared with April last year, sales dropped 23.3% and prices were down 4.1%. TRREB president Elechia Barry-Sproule said households were watching Canada–US trade tensions closely following the federal election.

New listings fell 0.7% from March to 15,214 units but rose 8.1% on the year.
