Nvidia CEO calls for changes to US AI chip export restrictions

Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA, ETR:NVD) CEO Jensen Huang has called on the Trump administration to change US regulations on exporting AI chips, arguing that the current rules limit the global competitiveness of American technology firms.

Speaking to the media in Washington, Huang said: “We need to accelerate the diffusion of American AI technology around the world. The policies and encouragement from the administration really need to support that.”

The Trump administration is currently reviewing a Biden-era regulation known as the Framework for Artificial Intelligence Diffusion, which divides countries into tiers that determine their access to advanced US AI chips.

The administration is reporteldy considering eliminating this tiered system in favor of a global licensing program.

“I’m not sure what the new diffusion rule is going to be, but whatever it turns out to be, it really has to recognize that the world has changed fundamentally since the previous diffusion rule was released,” Huang said.

The CEO also warned that China, and companies like Huawei, are rapidly narrowing the technology gap with the US in AI chip development.

“China is not behind,” he said. “Are they ahead of us? China is right behind us. We’re very, very close.”

Shares of Nvidia traded down 1.3% at about $108 on Wednesday afternoon, having fallen almost 20% in the year-to-date.
