OpenAI eyes $125B in revenue by 2029: report

OpenAI is projecting a dramatic jump in annual revenue to $125 billion by 2029, fueled not by its flagship ChatGPT but by a new generation of AI agents, according to internal documents viewed by The Information.

The company, backed by Microsoft, expects revenue to surge from $3.7 billion this year to $174 billion in 2030, with subscription income from ChatGPT rising to $50 billion in 2029 from $8 billion in 2024.

However, sales from AI agents and other products are expected to outpace those from the popular chatbot in the years ahead.

OpenAI is evolving from a chatbot provider to a digital labor platform powered by AI agents, positioning itself more like a cloud infrastructure provider such as AWS or Azure.

With 70% margins and a two-sided platform model, the company aims to monetize user intent through transactional AI-driven interactions, signaling a shift from traditional advertising to action-based engagement.
