The use of disposable vapes has dropped sharply in the UK ahead of a ban on their sale coming into force on 1 June, according to research by University College London.
Among 16 to 24-year-olds, the proportion mainly using single-use devices has fallen from 63% to 35% over the past year. Researchers believe many users are switching to refillable and rechargeable vapes in anticipation of the ban.
Overall adult vaping rates, which had grown steadily in recent years, have now plateaued. The new legislation targets environmental concerns and rising youth vaping, with single-use vapes contributing heavily to landfill waste and pollution.
Survey data from more than 88,000 people shows the shift began after the government announced the ban, suggesting many are adapting their habits early rather than quitting altogether.
Young people remain a particular focus, with health experts warning of the risks to concentration, learning and brain development.
