Solvonis chair hails ‘transformative’ 2024 as group pivots fully into mental health biotech

Dennis Purcell, chair of Solvonis Therapeutics PLC (LSE:SVNS), has described 2024 as a transformative year that put the group firmly on the path to becoming a biotechnology company focused on mental health.

The former polymer business has shed its legacy operations and repositioned itself around the co-development of new therapeutics for mental health and addiction.

The reset saw the group sell off its Slovenian polymer facility and rebrand as Solvonis Therapeutics, with the new name receiving shareholder backing in January.

The rebranding marked a decisive break from the company’s past in materials science and a shift toward purpose-built biotech focused on some of the most urgent unmet needs in healthcare.

The clearest sign of that shift came with the announcement of an agreement to acquire Awakn Life Sciences, a clinical-stage biotech developing treatments for addiction and mental health disorders.

That deal, expected to complete in 2025, is intended to bring Solvonis a pipeline of clinical assets and deeper scientific capabilities in psychedelic-assisted therapy — an emerging area of focus within the wider mental health landscape.

"We are proud of the resilience, agility, and dedication shown by our teams throughout this period of change," said chairman Purcell.

"The board extends its gratitude to all our employees, partners, and shareholders who have supported this journey.

"As we move into 2025, we are more focused than ever on building a therapeutics company capable of making a tangible difference in the lives of patients."

His comments accompanied the release of 2024 results, which revealed the group narrowed its operating loss to £1.38 from £3.12 million a year earlier.
